Most diesel trucks have 2 batteries for cranking power. Diesel engines are usually in the 22-1 compression range and some have 24 volt start/12 volt run. My wrecker and ramp truck are both Ford F-350 diesels and have 2 batteries. Big rigs are usually equipped with at least 3 batteries, some as much as 8. A lot of power is needed to crank diesel engines up, especially in the winter if the block heaters are not plugged in.

dual batteries was and probably still is an available factory orderable option for gas engines, although very rarely was it ordered, would only see it in very cold climate areas or on trucks equipped with welders and electric hoists and such, i have owned one so far with a gas engine and it was a 78 c-30 1 ton dually with a electric hoist dump bed
gas powered plwo trucks usually have two batteries also, almost always
good luck
