Mostly water, with enough land under a basking area that the turtle(s) can pull themselves completely out of the water.
Anything decorative such as plants/rocks etc... can be used but tend to either block filtration or be uprooted by the turtle. My set ups have gone from a naturalistic sloped and decorated vivarium type design to just rocks to just a floating basking dock, and my turtles seem to appreciate the extra space, and the filter is much more efficient because nothing gets in the way... I eventually want to develop a more natural set up again, but for now this seems to work best.

Keep it closer to water. They are Aquatic turtles. I sugest making a pond or aquarium, put water in it, then add in an island so they can sun bathe. If the pond is inground then make sure you keep it to where they can get out every now or then. They may just lay eggs, and don't forget they are a type of turtle that grows to the size of it's enviornment. T------T good luck.

Something else that wasn't addressed: You need a large tank. They grow fast and I recommend at least a 50 gallon tank. It may seem too big and expensive now, but will save you money in the long run. It is also much easier to keep a larger tank clean.

they are great little animals...
they dont need to be in water that much, they need a place to hide and keep dry, warm and even soft.
they are prone to respiratory infections if they dont stay warm in the winter. i have a warming lamp or near a heater is fine too.
i had a rock that came up out of the water that was big for him to sleep and rest.
the tank that i had wasnt very large, as i kept him in a small flat in china. i bought him on the street from a street vendor.
set up a glove that the little guy can crawl into, and its great.
the turtle loves to jump and isnt afraid of jumping from high places so be careful with that if you have one that does that.
also if you let them run around the floor of your place, it is easy to lose them. they are fast when they want to get away. and it is hard to find them.
i feed the little guy shrimp, and hes now spoiled and wont eat anything else.
