During that period there was hardly any contact in a business sense that could happen faster than a horse could run-news was weeks old by the time you heard it or received a decision from some remote place(like the other end of the country) so most transactions for any thing were very localized.
With the spread of federalism the south felt infringed upon for no other reason than the northh had more money/power and interfered with their long standing practices-----hence "We'll just form our own country!"
The slavery issue was always an issue,Evan though there were slaves in the nort but with an increasingly declining need because of the industrial revolution and enough Irish and Italian immigrants to work For pennies/week.
The "slavery issue was brought to the forefront when the south appeared to be making deals with England and in a brilliant political move Lincoln poulticed the whole war making England and France neutral

The real reason why the Civil War erupted in the United States has to do with states' rights. There were two sides to the issue:
1. Allowing states to make their own rules, which may differ from the federal government's rules. This included issues like slavery and taxation.
2. Mandating states to adhere to federal guidelines.

Slavery was more or less a divisive political tool used to break the south apart in order to place them under the guidelines of the federal government. Today, many "historians" have tried to revise history by saying that the Civil War was nothing but a war about slavery, but this is nothing more than politically correct propaganda and modern-day social engineering.

Good luck with the paper.

If you are speaking of the U.S Civil War, (and there are certainly have been, and are dozens and dozens of other civil wars) then you are looking at these reasons: the election of Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party was perceived as a threat to the Southern states and their "peculiar institution" called Slavery.
Since the Northern states were in control of the government for the first time, they had the power to stop Slavery from spreading to the new states and/or territories like Cuba. The Southern states reacted by seceding (leaving the Union), and took control of all forts, post offices, mints, arsenals, etc. in their states.
The Northern states seemed powerless to stop the Southern states from leaving and taking control of the forts, until finally the line was drawn at Fort Sumter, Charleston, South Carolina. When that fort was shelled by the secessionists (C.S.A. President Jefferson Davis ordered P.G.T. Beauregard to fire on the U.S. forces in the fort before it was re-supplied) in April 1861, it was the true beginning of an armed conflict. The rest is good history, and I am not even an American!

Besides the moral issue of slavery the two biggest were politics and economics. Politics because of the desire to keep a balance of power in the Senate (the North had outstripped the South in the House because of its far larger population). Economics because of the disparity between the more urban, industrialized North and the rural, agricultural South. Those are a couple of good places to start.

States rights for one, and another one is economy . At that time labor was important . Cheap labor benefited the land owners a great deal, so slavery was vital to their economy. However, ignorance was the greatest of them all. To think that one man has ownership of another was and is the zenith of ignorance. Believe me the war between the states is not over in the hearts of many Southern people. They still call us the aggressors from the North.
