I guess I'm having it checked, and then if I need my alignment corrected or treated, the shop will do it. How long should I expect to wait? Also, how long should paint on a car dry (hood and front bumper) before it's safe to be touched?

How long an alignment takes depends on what type of car. Most front wheel drive cars require a 4 wheel alignment. The contraptions that are hung on the car are cameras that detect the angles of each wheel. Because most front wheel drive cars have independent rear suspension, there are alignment specifications for the rear wheels. The front wheels require reading from the rear wheels for measurement. If the rear wheels are out of alignment, then the front wheels cannot be aligned properly. Usually, shims are added into the rear suspension to correct the alignment. Depending on the make and model, age of the vehicle and other factors, this can take some time. Older rear wheel drive vehicles that have a straight axle, usually do not require alignment unless it was involved in an accident that bent the suspension. Newer rear wheel drive cars have open axles and independent suspension now, so those also have a rear wheel alignment specification. I suggest to my customers that the alignment on their cars should be done at least once a year, preferably after the 'pothole season' in Spring has passed. As far as the paint? I'm not a body man, but I never touch paint until it's dry for a few hours!!! LOL!!

Allignment only takes about 15-20 minutes. The worker has to put some kind of contraption onto a wheel (at a time) that is hooked up to a computer. It really does not take that long. As for the paint job, the shop will keep the parts/vehicle until it is safe to be taken out and dried. Usually that takes a few hours. Expect that they will have your vehicle for a day! But auto body's usually have rent a cars for free so you will not be stuck without transportation! I hope this helps!!!

Alignment on a car shouldn't take more than 2 hours tops. I'd give the paint about 2 days to accurately dry.

15-20 minutes i dont think so it takes that long to set up the machineto check alignment , anywhere from 1 hour to 1 hour and a half for an alignment to be done. for the paint to dry depends on weather conditions and temp. if you can dont touch till next day

alignments take no more than an hour usually, but it could if they are busy with other customers cars. painting takes some preparing first, then 2-3 coats of color then 2-3 coats of clearcoat. you need to wait 15 minutes between each coat and then it needs to wait about 6 hours before you can touch it. it will be soft and susceptible to damage for about 24 hours, then you can wet sand and buff.
