I am 351/2 weeks pregnant, I went to the doctor today and was told that my cervix had shortened quite a bit since my last appointment. They also told me that I have an extremely low red blood count, so now I'm being put on a high dosage of iron pills. I go to a german hospital and asking my doctor any questions is difficult so I was hopeing someone could tell me if softening and shortening of the cervix is a sign of being in labor soon. I don't know if I should start to take it easy or continue trying to exercise and work as much as I am.

Unless you're dilating and having contractions you probably won't have the baby for another month. You can walk around for weeks with your cervix dilating and effacing before going into labor. Good luck.

I have been a 2 and thinned out (shortening of the cervix) For 4 weeks now. So labor is probably still a ways away. Did they say you were dialated at all? I also have been on iron for severe anemia. Continue the iron during your whole pregnancy. They should check your levels at every visit to make sure that your not iron toxic. Too much iron. If you have been feeling tired, no energy, hard to catch your breath, the iron will help out soooo much! Good luck and if the doc didnt say to limit activity then I wouldnt. Stay active- still may be awhile -I am 3 days overdue!

It's not a sign that labor is near. It could still be weeks until you go into labor. At nearly 36 weeks, you could probably start resting, (trust me, rest will not come once that baby is born lol) and just enjoy the last few weeks. It's usually recommended to take it easy the last month or so anyways!

I don't think American doctor's call it shortening usually, I think it's called lightening (the cervix is thinning), but I have seen the reference to shortening online.

GOOD LUCK!!! Get a good movie and a box of treats (or pickles lol) and relax!

Yes but it could still be a while! Walk lots. Have lots of sex. Those things may get the ball rolling!
