If you are recieving state assistance they can in fact discontinue your assistance if you do not give them the father's identity. Why? Because parents have a responsibility to take care of their children, not the State. If the father has insurance or should be paying child support then he needs to do so in the State's eyes. That saves your State money for those things.

If you give up his name, the State can bring an action for child support and probably to estblish paternity. If you absolutly must have that assistance, then you ought to go ahead and let them do that b/c if he has a violent past or something then he might not even get visitation. Also--if you go ahead and establish paternity and the father dies somewhere down the road your child will be entitled to Social Security.

If you can find a way to pay for daycare and you do worry about safety, then get off the state program b/c it's not worth it. But only you know that.

You probably ought to call a family law attorney in your area for a free consultation.

The reason why this is happening is because there are laws protecting the taxpayers of your state whose hard-earned dollars are being spent on keeping you and your offspring alive. If you are on any type of government assistance, child support is not negotiable. The state will pursue your child's father for child support to be reimbursed for the money you're receiving. Why would you want to be on the public tit while letting the guy who's half responsible for putting this child here gets off free? As for being scared of him, YOU chose to breed with him. Put on your big girl panties and learn to deal with the consequences of your actions. You have two choices: Either comply with the authorities, give them his name, get a lawyer, go to court and get custody established. Or withdraw from receiving public assistance and prepare to raise your child on your own, with no financial help from anyone.
