and, the salesgirl looked almost scornful at me. And, then, a good-looking couple walked in, and this salesgirl got all alert and respectful towards them.
Do you think this happened because, I was underdressed or did it happen because I was without a partner?

it was completely due to your appearance. I have been through this myself but I am a little spiteful. I continued looking through things at the store and found a few things to buy - some things I really didn't want but I was going to make a point...

I took a whole armful of clothes to the register to pay ( a few hundred dollars worth) - when I was asked if anyone helped me with my choices, I made sure I spoke loudly and clearly enough for all to hear -" your salesperson had her nose pointed where she thought she smelled money so she ignored me - where do you keep your customer comment cards?"

They were tripping over themselves trying to make sure I was happy - I continued with the cold demeanor and paid for my purchases and left the store - the next day I came back to return a bunch of the stuff I had bought (I never intended to keep the stuff but they didn't need to know that) When they asked me what the reason was for the returns, I told them I couldn't get the attention of their sales person so I didn't have the opportunity to try anything on so when I did this at home, I discovered I didn't like what I had bought so now I would like to return it.

I did fill out the comment card and got a letter back from the company with a discount card to be used for my next purchase - it also indicated that I should ask for the manager when I went to the store so that they could ensure all my needs were met.

It was all a bit of a pain but totally worth it in the end.

Probably because you were underdressed.

I once walked into a jewlery store, wearing sporty clothes and when I asked the sales clerk to see a platinum bracelet, he said: Honey, you sure you can afford it? I kept my cool and smiled.

Then I asked to see many other jewlery pieces, which required some work from his part (he had to get the latter, get another set of keys to open a display, run to the back of the store to double check on the price, etc...) and at the end, I thanked him and walked out.

After I left, I gurantee you he had at least half an hour to put everything back properly and I made him loose a sale because other clients were in the store who got served by another clerk.

ha ha

Don't worry about it and always remember idiots like that salesgirl wouldn't have a job IF it wasn't for the customer no matter HOW they choose to dress.

Ahhh...the "Pretty Woman on Rodeo Drive" incident. If you walk into a high end boutique or store, looking like a schlub, expect to be ignored or treated with not very much respect. It may not sound fair, but if you come in, looking like you are there to browse instead of spend money, you will be overlooked by the salespeople.

Most likely it was the way you were dressed. Sometimes, my hubby will say go get out for a while and with out thinking about my appearance of a sweatshirt and jeans I go and shop. I do get looks when I go to Ann Taylor or Talbots, but I am not there to impress them.

Probably because you were underdressed. I've found there's no better way to not have to deal with annoying salespeople than to go shopping in less than spectacular clothing.

It was the fact that you were not dressed up. I have done this before and they treat you like crap- I always laugh when I am asked who helped me and I say no one as they ring up my big sale and no one gets any commission. Don't let it bug you, have fun with it and get needy- ask for lots of help. Serves them right, they are paid to kiss your butt and should do it!! (I have seen plenty of photos of celebs, and they look pretty trashy when they shop too, think they get treated that way?)

She probably gets paid on commission and figured more sales from a better dressed couple than an under-dressed you.
