Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, the second and fifth wives--were nieces of the Duke of Norfolk, but their lives were very different.

Anne was raised to be a courtier, just as her sister and brother were. She possessed intelligence and sophistication, and a reasonably good education for a woman of her time.

Catherine was one of a family that was essentially pacelled out to various relatives following her mother's death; her father had little fortune and even less luck. Catherine ended up in the household of the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, her father's stepmother, and her upbringing was pretty much on what some call "the cornstalk plan--yanked up by the hair of the head"--and it's not very far from the truth.

She was basically illiterate and neglected. She shared the dormitory with the other young women of the Dowager Duchess' household, and was seduced at an early age--13 or 14--by one of the gentlemen in the household, Francis Dereham--it was a practice of the ladies of the of the household to entertain the gentlemen at late-night feasts, and (despite what we in our age would consider a frightful lack of privacy) nature definitely took its course.

There is some reason to believe that Catherine had actually contracted a common-law marriage to Dereham--at her trial it was said that they called one another "wife" and "husband," and at one point Dereham left Catherine in charge of a sum of his money when he was traveling elsewhere (at this time, a marriage could be entered into by both parties staing in the presence of witnesses that they intended to live as husband and wife--this was valid).

Problems arose when Catherine was found a place at court as one of the ladies in waiting to Henry's fourth wife, Anne of Cleves. She fell in love with a young man of the court, Thomas Culpeper (some say they were cousins; supposedly he was her mother's nephew), but was used by her family as a pawn in the dynastic game--when it became obvious that the Cleves marriage was a failure, Catherine was put forward as a likely candidate for the king's affections.

She was, as noted, barely literate and still pretty unsophisticated. Still in her teens, Catherine was several years younger than Henry's daughter Mary, child of his marriage to Katherine of Aragon. It was likely her youth and seeming innocence that first attracted Henry, and as soon as he was divorced from Anne of Cleves, he married Catherine Howard.

Unfortunately, Catherine was essentially blackmailed by some of her old "friends" from the dormitory, and gave them posts in her household. Moreover, she still was in love with Culpeper, and there is evidence that she was unfaithful to Henry with him.

Everyone in high places has enemies, and Catherine was no exception. It wasn't so much her personally as it was the fact that she represented a threat to a faction at court (just as another faction at court had pushed to have her noticed by the king). The result was an accusation of adultery which led naturally to the block. She was the second of his queens to be beheaded--just like her coursin.

Catherine Howard (wife 5) and Anne Boleyn (wife 2) were first cousins - Catherine's father and Anne's mother were brother and sister.
