A topographic map is one that shows elevations of different points in a region. The most common method is via contour lines. The contour line connects points that have the same elevation, with lines occurring at consistent altitude intervals. The lines would typically be labeled with their elevations, or else they might be color coded. So a mountain, for example, would appear as a series of roughly concentric closed curves. The steeper the grade, the closer together the contour lines would be, because the elevation is changing more rapidly.

"Topographic maps are a variety of map characterized by large-scale detail and quantitative representation of relief, usually using contour lines in modern mapping, but historically using a variety of methods. Traditional definitions require a topographic map to show both natural and man-made features, but the representation of relief is popularly held to define the genre, such that even small-scale maps showing relief are commonly called "topographic."
