Being that slaves were considered chattel property, "saving" them automaticly constituted the commission of grand theft which usually merited the death penalty. That is of course provided that the owner of said slaves or the slave trackers didn't just shoot you on sight because either of them pretty much had a license to kill in the commission of their "duties".

None if you didn't get caught. But if you did get caught, you would have probably been inprisoned or hung for stealing someone elses property. If you were imprisoned, a riot would have insued and you would have probably been hung by a lynching mob. Either way you would die.
Let's say you get how ever many slaves freed as you can. I believe the figure was around 90% of freed slaves were kidnapped and exported across the slave line border to be resold(this was called the reverse underground railroad). Depending on the person, the risks would seem high and rewards low.

I saw a movie recently, with whoopi goldberg...she save the slves...it seemed so easy :):): just doing the right thing :)

You could be charged with harboring a fugitive, you could be killed in the process of helping one or have your reputation publicly ruined.
