Try the Internet Live Music Archive:
http://www.archive.org/details/etree

100% free, and (unlike the other suggestions) 100% LEGAL! - Supported by the bands themselves.

The answer to how and where is the same.

If you are looking for copyrighted material (stuff you'd find in the mall CD store), go to www.itunes.com, www.napster.com or music.yahoo.com and download their software.

Each has advantages / disadvantages and there is a minor cost for each. They are not necessarily interchangeable, so once you go with one, stick with it.

LimeWire isn't *totally* bad but I'd recommend getting Morpheus instead. Go to www.download.com and go from there.
