i hate movies like this because they don't make any sense. they are stupid. like the ring: why was that boy so damn pale and weird? was he posessed? and in the grudge, what was up with that asian girl making those funny noises? and dark water what was up with all that stupid water running everywhere? and pulse? wtf was up with all the unscary downright confusing scenes? what ever happened to good old slasher movie flicks like "Halloween" and "Freddy Krueger" and "Friday the 13th?" I hate all these stupid supernatural unscary films that people hype up just so you'll go see them.

Sounds like you are intrigued enough to at least check them out. I don't understand why people assume the Japanese inspired movies make no sense. Does a Nightmare on Elm St. make any more sense then The Ring? It's all imagination and fantasy. At least with the Japanese-like films there is some artistry to it! I for one enjoy seeing the ghosts covered in pale makeup crawling down staircases, with their heads twisted backwards rather than the same guy killing different people with the same knife, axe, or chainsaw!! The slasher movies of the 80's are out! Take for instance Candyman with a deeper plot line then most of the American horror movies, or Jeepers Creepers, things are heading in a more supernatural direction.
I think the question that needs to be asked is, does gore equal scary or does freaky $hit equal scary.
Oh and lets not forget Scream 1, that piece was scary yo! the rest sucked!

Well I think that people have just gotten bored of the dozens of cookie cutter slasher films of the last 20 or so years. The Japanese influence of these films add a new perpective to horror. I don't know about how "artsy" these films are, but they are fresh to American audiences just because of cultural differences. However most of these films are just quick remakes of the originals anyway just done with American actors. They are already becoming a bit long in the tooth though and will become just another run in the mill genre soon.

I think the reason we don't have good old fashion slasher movies might have something to do with the fact that girls now days know better to run out side of the house instead of runny up stairs. Pluse slasher movie's very rarely have a good plot it's like the same old thing everyone knows what's gonna happen but this is just my opion.

These movies are based on japanese horror films. They do make sense, despite what you think. They're made for more intelligent viewers, people who can follow the complicated stories and understand the symbols represented in the movies. They actually make you 'think'- I wonder sometimes if that's why people hate them so much. I personally adore them- they're a WONDERFUL change from the regular brand of plotless, pointless, sadistic gory zombie/slasher/torture movies that have been running rampant these days. Those are the ones I can't understand- how do people find them entertaining? They're pointless movies about people in terrible pain, and they all have similar plots. BORING.

A lot of people seem to dislike The Ring, etc. I guess American viewers just arent ready for actual artistic horror films. It doesn't have to scare you to be a good movie, you know.

They are all proof that Americans can't remake Asian horror films well. American horror directors are, generally, not known for subtlety and building terror, instead relying on quick shocks.
