I would say that's hardly a fair comparison. But, people point to their wrists as a natural response because some people are just to ignorant or don't hear you if you just ask. If you just ask, they'll make you repeat the question while asking with gestures is more effective. Especially if the noise level is a little high. I've asked the time before with a gesture and the person told me the time through another gesture ( shows you with his fingers ) because we couldn't hear each other over the noise in a bar. As for the crotch thing. That's just not common sense, unless your in a gay bar. They may not get the question though even with gestures. That's a very suggestive gesture in a gay bar. I think gestures in asking the time is probably the only question that comes with a gesture most of the time. I never see gestures in most other questions.

Historically the wrist was the place that folks wore watches. Many still do. Before cell phones and PDA displays were the rage more folks used watches.
Pointing to the crotch, however, could be constued as a need to urinate or a desire for sex. One could get quite a few faces red, I suspect, if you went around pointing at your crotch. Why not try it for awhile in a crowed mall?

Children sometimes do. Society considers it rude, and the sign could be confused with "I'm a man/woman", "I want sex", or the related message, "Suck my cock now". The ambiguity is too high to make it a viable sign.
