I haven't encountered any that were embarrassed. All of the ones I've known said it loud and proud.

Most Atheists aren't embarrassed to admit their beliefs. With the rabid Christians that are out there, most don't offer the information upon meeting someone for the first time because of the vitriolic hatred that comes from fundie Christians. Why subject yourself to a half hour lecture on how you're going to hell and you're damned? Personally, I'd rather watch paint dry.

Embarassed? On the contrary, I'm utterly proud to be a member of a group that actually uses rational thinking as it's basis for a world philosophy rather than the writings of an 1800 year old book.

MANY people assume that Athiest=evil, crude, miserable person. (Which is not the case) When religious people refer to athiests, they lack respect for them. I avoid talking about the fact that I am an athiest at all costs around people who may be offended or try and attack my beliefs.

I don't know that they are embarrassed, but they have probably learned that people give them grief if they reveal this about themselves, and just as soon leave the whole topic out of the conversation.

On the whole, one's politics and spritual beliefs should not be general topics of conversation---they just encourage devisiveness and nobody wins, but lots of people can end up angry.

Admitting you are gay is harder than saying you are athiest. I would not have a problem if I was.

I'm not ashamed of being atheist. But I acknowledge that I'll never get elected to public office, and my moral values will be questioned all my life.
