My housemates don't seem to believe me when I tell them that it's best to leave the windows slightly open when they've used the bathroom or they are cooking in the kitchen. I thought this was common sense... clearly not! Our walls are starting to go mouldy and they are all just saying it must be because it's been raining recently!!!!!

I know mold is so gross!

Once it starts growing, it's hard to make it stop, even after you've cleaned it, so it's best to take precautions then to wait for it to get really bad.

Here's a site that might help to talk to them about how SICK you can get from household mold: http://healthandenergy.com/household_mold_and_illness.htm

good luck!

Running a letting agency, this is a common problem - people think that we make it up and that the mold is there cos its wet outside - oh how wrong - but believe me when that person gets ill its a different story - all houses need to be aired and if you live in an older property the chances are that there is not adequate ventilation because it was built before central heating. Worst offences for condensation which causes mold - drying clothes indoors - towels over radiators, leaving windows closed after a bath or shower - leaving the tiles wet after a shower and closing the bathroom door and leaving kitchen doors etc shut - when cooking . perhsps you can get them to read this and then investiagte what happens as the mold grows on the walls and the spores are ingested through the air - they can make you very ill as you get in your bronchial tubes - tell them tell them!!!!

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who gets house mates lacking common sense -- although this is actually scientific sense which seems to be even scarcer than common. Since it sounds like you have no exhaust fans in your place just running a fan will help by keeping the air moving and promote drying. Of course, having it in the window - pulling the air out is the best. In the long run the cost of running the fan is less than the cost of getting sick. You can also get little pellets that you put in a strainer that pulls moisture out of the air and deposits it in a container. And lastly, you can get de-humidifiers. Mold is very very hard to get rid of once it gets its foot on the wall. Good luck with the bleach and water idea - I get sick from the odor of bleach. Tea Tree Oil is supposed to help destroy fungus and mold and it is less caustic.

It appears your house mates are a bit dense since the evidense is appearing befor their eyes. But be that as it may, they should be advised that mold causes serious health issues. So if the common sense approach will not work for them, you should take steps to protect yourself. Fill a spray bottle 2/3 full with water and 1/3 bleach. Keep it in the bathroom and use it every day. With luck the smell of the bleach may clean out their clogged brains and they will begin to use the vents. Until then it will kill the mold.

I can't help you there, but I can sympathise. It is very frustrating to have stupid housemates, who can't understand that they should take advice.
My Spanish housemate keeps his milk and orange juice in the cupboard. Then he takes the milk back to the shop and complains when it curdles. Apparently this is what they do in Spain.

My French flatmate smokes Marlboro Red's constantly and always has the windows open to get rid of the smoke, and for this he rationalises that there is no point in having the heating on at all.

Take one large empty clean jar with screw top lid - place inside a little ot the mould that has appeared - ask one of the party to do this with you so no -one will say you set it up --- then close the lid leave it in the kitchen and wait for the mould to grow --- dont forget to show it off when they are just about to eat and mention that in time their lungs with look the same - or are they coughing already........ spores of mould are breathable I saw my father sick, ill and die from the causes of damp accommodation. Stick to your theories and win.

you are perfectly correct, extractor fans too if you have them (with the windows slightly open aswell....the airs gotta come from somewhere), if you dont you will end up with bad mildew and flaking paint. The fresh air is very healthy too

Tell them that when the bill comes for the mold removal
that they are paying for it.

Housemates should share some home repair costs.

Even if their name isn't on the lease.
