The check engine light is usually a sign of a pollution control problem. A malfunctioning or missing gas cap is a pollution control problem. I have heard if you disconnect the battery positive terminal for 30minutes and the light comes back on shortly after re-connecting, you have to have the engine serviced. Could be the EGR valve, or the engine needs a tune-up, or....?

the light is saying ur engine needs to be serviced. some cars automatically have it come on every certain amount of miles to tell u to have oil changed, filters, and all that good stuff. it'll also comes on if the car really does need work other than ruitine maintenence. which could be serious work so dont just turn it off, take it to a mechanic that has a diagnosis machine to hook it up and tell u exactly what it is. (a proffesional garage, not just the $40 version your neighbor has in the garage.)

When the check engine light shows, it means the engine is throwing a trouble code.

take it to an Advance Auto or AutoZone. They can use a device called a scanner to check what's wrong for free.

stop by your local dealership or local auto parts store, if light is flashing do not drive it could be your catalytic converter loading up with fuel. some simple things to check would be gas cap loose and if it is the light typically will not go off on its own right away sometimes a week depending on how often and long you drive for

Go get it checked.
If you have an Auto Zone near you they will check it for free. It isn't the best but it could possibly give you an idea.

You need to take it in to the shop. You haven't provided enough info. Is it hard to start? It could be a dirty throttle or any number of things.
