How can I find out it's value?
I know it depends on how old the sword is. It's my understanding some were passed down the generations and others are modern swords manufactured for the war.

It's notoriously difficult to appraise any antique without actually bringing the item to an expert. This is especially true with Japanese art swords (traditionally made samurai swords) where the market is flooded with imitations.

So if you really want to know what your sword is worth you'll need to find an expert. Otherwise you'll need to research the sword yourself and find auction result listings for similar items.

Chances are you don't have a priceless treasure I'm afraid. Most WWII swords were Gunto swords, stamped out of plate steel instead of forged in a traditional manner. Even a traditional sword may have not held up well to 60 years in the hands of someone who does not know how to care for it.

You can try posting pictures of the sword at www.swordforum.com to get an opinion about the sword's identification and possible value but you won't know for sure without an expert.

You need to find an antique arts collector and bring it in to have it appraised. An expert on Samurai swords would be able to appraise it for you and tell you what it's worth.

Is it a Hatori Hanzo sword (Kill Bill)? Priceless! :-)
