Some people just do really poorly at being forced to recall information or how to do things on demand. They know this from experience and therefore panic before exams.

Another reason is that a person goes in and they really know they have not prepared properly.

People panic because the pressue to succeed in our society is tremendous. No one wants to be a failure. Not to mention, the importance they put on the SAT and ACT as the main hurdle for getting into college adds to the stress for taking the exam.

It is the anxiety and whether or not if they are going to pass. I don't really panic during exams but I tend to forget and not do very well.

I guess there's no answer, last week I had an exam and I was studying really hard, and I was so nervous

They are worried that they will not pass and will have to start all over again wasting the previous knowledge from before.

Because you either pass and carry on with the next chapter of your life,or you fail and you're stuck in that chapter again :P

Because failure could lead to ridicule at best and potentially failure in life. Bad test score, B+ in class, state school, drugs, unwanted pregnancy, crime, jail........Oh, I should have studied harder for that test!

Because if they get it wrong their lives are ruined and they will spend the rest of there lives selling their bodies and souls for food.

Because they are afraid to fail. Failure is not a thing most people look forward too.
