Actually craving ice is a sign of iron deficiency. My doctor told me if I craved chewing on ice to let her know. I read it in the pregnancy book "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and the book they gave me at the doctors too. It would makes sense because pregnancy is known to cause anemia. I was actually put on a double dose of high iron along with my prenatal vitamins.

Well I am 32 weeks pregnant, and asked my doctor the same question!! The answer I got was that I am anemic. With my first child I was also anemic and given iron transfusions after the delivery. Another question I asked was why does it taste like I am sucking on a penny sometimes. Same answer ... anemia. Maybe you could ask your doctor if you're having some of the same symptoms. Good luck! =)

Constantly chewing ice indicates an IRON deficiency in most people. Have her check her blood with the doctor, or make sure she's taking some vitamins, eating iron rich foods beef, prok, poultry, dark green veggies, beans etc... In pregnancy, the baby is trying to tell her that she needs more of it... I had a craving for protein with my pregnancy- Constantly eating eggs, mmm pancakes, chicken etc...

Every woman and every pregnancy is different. I have been pregnant 4 times and never ate ice with any of my pregnancies. Eating ice was normal for your cousin.

I had this with my first pregnancy my OB told me that I was anemic and my body was not getting enough iron (which for some crazy reason makes you crave ice) you should tell her to get some iron tablets (get them approved from her OB first) is she taking her pre natals? most of them have a good bit of iron. Also Peanut Butter is terribly fattening but will help with anemia. And meats as well

During labor those horror nurses wont let you have a glass of water so they give your ice chips to keep your mouth moist, all that breathing and huffing can give you cotton mouth....it is sooooo nice...as for just having ice during your pregnant, for me my body temperature was higher and it helped cool me off inside, everyone is different

It is usually a sign of iron defency. It means they are anemic and need more iron in their blood. They should let their doctor know that they are eating so much ice so he can check for it.

cravings for ice can be a symptom of anemia, when your body is not getting enough iron, or pica, when you are not getting enough minerals and vitamins in your diet. She should take iron suppliments and vitamins if she gets pregnant again
