Your math is correct, but your association is not. What you'e saying is similar to saying that if an orange and an apple are the same size they will taste the same.

If we use your measurements, 1 cubic foot would work like this: Each of 6 sides would be 1 x 1=1 sq ft. Then since there are siz sides, 6 x 1 = 6 cubic feet. See the error? 1 cubic foot is 1 x 1 x 1 = 1 CUBIC feet.

A cubic yard (or cubic foot) is a THREE dimensional measurement. You are attempting to compare this to 6 TWO dimentional sides. The sum of the 6 sides is just that....LINEAR measurements. The volumetric measurements are totally different. Guaged by multiplying Height x Width x Depth. 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 CUBIC feet.

Is this a question? Seems like a statement...anyway...

Your analysis wont be of much use since you will have an infinitely thin depth of cover.

If you assume a yard is 3ft then a cubic yard is 3ft x 3ft x 3ft = 27 cubic feet in volume. Typically you would be having dirt or concrete or something delivered that you want to cover a known area with (gravel for a driveway for example). Figure out that you want say 3 inches of cover then you can figure out how much you need. Say your driveway is 100ft long by 12 ft wide so you have an area that is 1200 sf in area that you want covered 3 inches deep. 3 inches is 0.25ft. So the total cubic feet you will need is 1200sf x 0.25ft = 300 cf. You know that a cubic yard is 27cf so the total cubic yards needed is 300cf x 1cy/27cf = 11.1 cubic yards.

Hope this helps

not sure what the question is!
a cubic yard is 3 x 3 x 3 feet so 27 cubic feet.
to dig out 1 cubic yard of soil over an area of 54 sq.ft. you would need to remove a layer 6 inches deep. Hope this helps.
or:-
yes I agree, a 1-yard cube has 6 faces, each 3 feet square, i.e. each face is 9 sq.ft.
9 sq.ft. x 6 faces = 54 sq.ft. total surface area.

If you are talking about the surface area of a cubic yard, I guess you are correct. But so what? Are you wrapping it for the holidays?
