or is there another layer. Is there plywood between the brick and 2" x 4" framing? A visual resource would be greatly appreciated if one has a link?

Yes, there is sheathing there and a layer of vapor barrier is stapled to the outside of it.

The frame of the house is covered with OSB sheathing and a vapor barier and then most often chicken wire and then brick or stucco.

http://www.bia.org click on the technical notes tab, find the right topic in the menu, then you will find proper brick wall construction which most building codes require

Specifically, there are architect's / engineer's diagrams of how it should be built, at that website, specifically at http://www.bia.org/html/frmset_thnt.htm

It veries with houses, especially older ones, but most new ones are built now with DuPont Tyvek paneling between the facade and the framing.
