Since helium is lighter than air, the instant it is exposed to the atmosphere, it escapes into outer space (cool, eh?). As a result, the only place you can find Helium is trapped underground.

The largest source of Helium is as a byproduct from Natural Gas processing. A mixture of gasses like methane, ethane, CO2, and a little bit of helium get trapped in underground caverns, and gas processors extract the helium from these gasses when they are processing them for sale.

Helium is actually "mined" like natural gas. It accumulates (or is trapped) in underground reservoirs along with petroleum. Therefore, helium production tends to occur where oil production is important. In the US, oil fields in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas have been important. In the world, Algeria, Russia, Qatar and other middle eastern oil-producing countries are important sources.

Heliumn is in the air in very small amts. Special equipment is required to caputure it. I am not sure of the amt in the air but it is very small. Large amts of Air are compressed and then at various temperatures and pressures it is released. He and several other gases are made during this process.
