There are some studies that have been done that do link birth defects and other abnormalities in babies to fathers who are heavy smokers. It seems that heavy smoking can affect a man's sperm. This does not mean that all babies born to men who are heavy smokers will have problems, however, there does seem to be evidence of an increased risk. Drinking heavily may be more harmful to the baby once he/she is born as heavy drinking is often involved in incidences of child abuse and neglect.

Is very important the hereditary component. The baby may born with the predisposition to be an alcohol and cigarette user, due to the genes received. Another important component is the environmental component, if the baby born with the predisposition and see the parents smoking and drinking, the probability to repeat the behavior is very high. Avoiding this scenario for the present and future health of the baby is the best solution.

Alcohol and nicotine won't screw up his sperm if that's what you're asking. The sperm that do get screwed up don't have a chance to make it to fertilization. Being around second hand smoke while you are preggers is not good though. Also, if he is a violent drunk, then that's pretty harmful too. Other than that, it's mostly you that should stay away from the alcohol and smokes. Go see a doctor, there are other things, like vitamins (folic acid) that you need to be taking and your doctor will give you the down low on that sh!t.

Not really. If you smoke or drink while pregnant it can harm the baby. Once the baby arrives, being around the heavy smoker/drinker may be harmful to baby's health. Second hand smoke is bad - and a heavy drinker is just plain dangerous.

It could, I guess. I mean if the father of the baby has an existing genetic condition, it could affect the baby, and since smoking and drinking can affect the condition of the father's body, why not? But other than something genetic, I think the mom and what she does have more of an affect on the baby that the father.

It is my understanding that the sperm is effected by the fathers intake. No matter what he intakes. The damage is done to the sperm. The chances of having an unhealthy baby are no ones guess. But if you are pregnant; stay away from all alchol (of coarse) and eat right. Saying a prayer can't hurt.

very much so . drinking causes a huge problem called fetal alcohol poisoning and this is something that will alter the child's life for ever. this condition is something that is similar to mental retardation.
smoking is less troublesome but still harmful . makes the baby get less concentration of o2 in there blood stream can lead to brain damage, and increase in birth defects and breathing problems later .

Only if he is smoking around you while you're pregnant and drinks until he is abusive.

The mother's health actions are the only ones who really effect the baby's growth and development. If he continues his bad habits while you are around, THEN you need to take action.
