The Brooklyn Dodgers. From 1941-1956 the Yankees and Dodgers met 7 (seven) times in the World Series with the N.Y. Yankees winning 6 (six) while the Brooklyn Dodgers winning only once - their only championship - in 1955.

I'm a Yankee fan... it's the Red Sox, for sure - though I hate to use the word hate:-)
This rivalry is so big, there's even a wiki page dedicated to it covering highlights of this long history (and even so, there's alot of coverage missing). This is a rivalry that started as early as the 20s, with the arrival of Boston's top pitcher and hitter - Babe Ruth.
I was watching a 1976 game when Nettles and Bill Lee went at it. It brought home, not only the existence of the rivalry but the, sometimes, explosive emotions that went with it.
I think that every generation of fans is brought into this rivalry whether they want it or not, because these two teams are always squaring off.
There may be other teams that might have a reason to avenge losses against the Yankees, but few of them meet as often as the Yankees and Red Sox and none go back nearly 100 years.

I don't think anyone gives a damn about the Yankees enough to hate them anymore since they choke in the playoffs every year since the turn of the millenium in 2001.
They've become the Buffalo Bills of baseball...always make it to the end, always choke under pressure in the big game.
The Yankees are a non-issue. As a Phillies fan, I hope that if the Phillies get to the World Series that they will face the Yankees, so that they could walk all over them in the same way that the Diamondbacks, Angels, Red Sox, Tigers and other teams have done in the playoffs for the past six years.

2 choice here, either the red sox for well the rivalry is great or the New York Mets, it's 2 teams from the same town trying to compete to be the bigger ball club. The yankees with 26 rings are viewed as the more elite team in NY when really over the past couple years the mets have had either a better record against the yanks or even a better record in general.

Will people stop saying low budget teams? The only reason they even have a team is because the Yankees give them tons of money. The team with the best reason could be any team. The Yanks buy the game out and ruin it.
But yeah, whoever brings up Matsuzaka knows absolutely nothing about baseball. It is an investment, and in three years all of that money will be completely paid for by japanese revenue, and then the profits come.

The BoSox and after the Boston Massacre 2 this past year, they have even more reason to hate the Yankees. That 5 game sweep was about one thing... AL East bragging rights

Not sure if they did hate them but back in the day the Kansas City Athletics used to serve as the Yankees "minor league" farm team. The height of this was when Roger Maris was traded for Hank Bauer.

2 teams. The Red Sox for 1949, 1978, 1999, 2003 and now August 2006. The Devil Rays for training in Tampa and drawing better to some exhibition games than the D'Rays do for the avg home game.

Correction:: They have NOT beaten the Braves in the World Series SEVERAL times. Maybe once or twice because the Braves haven't been there that often. The Red Sox are undoubtedly their greatest rival and neither team or their fans like or tolerate the other.
