It started with the slaves doing traditional African then evolved with a taste of country, a taste of jazz, with a little bit of creole thrown in to spice it up. Get a poor depressed person trying to make a buck or two, throw in a bottleneck slide guitar & some stories to tell & that will give you a place to start from. The blues were not "created," but instead evolved over a period of years, like most musical styles do. They originated in several older musical stylings, some more obscure than others. Ragtime was one, and large musical orchestras were another. One of the signatures of blues music is the call-and-response, which originated in gospel. The music that most people recognize as the blues, e.g., Muddy Waters, BB King, etc., which originated in the 20s and 30s, was not even the first to be called blues. Going back to the latter part of the 19th century, you can find song titles such as "St. Louis Blues," which was done by a big band orchestra. (My apologies for blanking on their name.) Blues has been a relatively steady musical style, but continues to evolve in such a way as to remain true to its roots.

The blues were created by slaves as a way of escaping the tortures of slavery. They started as chants during the times they were working.
