I just did a belt on a 1998 Escort and it looked fine. But my girlfriend was advised by Ford that 89,000 miles was too much.
Ford recommended 65000 miles. Also a 2.0 engine SOHC.
What surprised me was, the CHILTON manual said you had to remove the belt by loosening the alternator and pulling it forward. And to remove all kinds of plastic shields below the engine.
BULL!! I just put a 3/8 breaker bar into the tensioner pulley (square hole), pried it forward and the belt was slack enough to remove and replace. 20 minutes work.

There isn't a service interval for the serpentine belt (more commonly known as a fan belt). If they are found to be heavily cracked, full of stones or squealing at a service you will be advised to change it.

i own a repair shop, and id replace it every 15 thousand miles if it needed it,,they usually last a lot longer then that but i replace them around 25 thousand on my personal vehicles, this way i know there always good, you can set up a time chart for your vehicle though that will help you keep track of the maintenance on it,,and try to go by it,as good as possible, but these belts out last the older belts,,there designed to last good luck i hope this help,s.

It's on the servicing schedule somewhere, but I do mine every couple of years or so, or maybe 25,000. Probably unnecessary, they'll last much longer, but it saves the hassle if the bugger goes late on a dark, wet night!

Look at your belt. Does it look brittle,or do you notice any cracks on the inside. If you do, then its time to change your belt.
