Firstly they look positively alien and not like anything else we're used to. Secondly they move in short sharp scurries of movement. This is believed to be an ancestral fear of sudden movement because it was used by animals that used to prey on us and we developed the fear as a reaction. Thirdly some are known to be poisonous and again it is a defense mechanism to be scared of things that could harm us

Ignorance is the culprit. It is easier just to be afraid of something then it is to learn about whatever (spiders). Some our poisonous. So to tell a kid "well kid you need to make sure when you see this spider...." Easier just to tell a kid that spiders are whatever. The kid grows up to be scared....
Phobias are the fear of the unknown. Some people do have a reason though....most don't.

Because they can bite ppl, and its the fact that they look nasty.

Most are quite harmless, but the way they move and look makes people scared.

Also this is FACT, the average person eats 8 spiders a year in there sleep. They crawl into people mouth's and get swallowed up.

Because they're evil little buggers who hide in your bed!! Lets face it spiders don't look nice, lots of them bite, they're creepy and hairy and build webs which stick to your face if you're unfortunate enough to walk through one. I can't think of any reasons why people would like or not be afraid of spiders!

It's an evolutionary thing- same with snakes. We were, not so long ago, cave dwellers. It was dark and they were poisonous. Survival instinct stuff, that's all.
