While their is a masculine and feminine way of thinking, it is important to have a combination of each. Individually they can not stand alone, but at the same time together they contradict each other.

Your emotional sensibilities are involuntary and are percieved as either a negative or positive experience. Reason on the other hand is a faculty of the mind where judgements are made in the interpretation of external or internal data which may or may not affect the emotional states.
In the instance of negative emotional states it is important to remember those things which are under your control and those which are not, and to respond accordingly depending on the ends to which you aim.
Feelings follow action....always.
I am reminded in this instance where it is so common for someone to announce that they are "in love," or that they hate this or that person, or situation. It is often seen as a choice that is made where these emotional states were had but the choice to love or hate in acts that create these involuntary states of the sensibilities are what is the voluntary act of the will. To say that you love someone today and that tomorrow you do not, or may not is nonsensical. Loving feelings are created by loving actions. If it is not so then it is merely infatuation or lusting of the eyes.
You should never let emotions guide the volitional acts of the will. Emotional states that are the result of rational judgements of the will are honestly begotten and genuine to moral agency.
This is your balance. Act according to the desired emotional ends and never allow emotional acts to rule over reason.
Feelings always follow action.

Kgirl, I wish your question's answer is as easy as it sounds. It is actually the aim of all spiritual teachings to achieve a state of equillibrium between reason & emotion in any person as the ultimate end goal.

This could be one of the first questions needed to get you on the path of truth seeking until you come across the spiritual system where you will feel comfortable and satisfied.

However before you're illuminated, a small hint to attaining some control over emotion and reason is consistent self-observation and revision. That could be the simplest way of spiritual progress, but it's also not easy. Hope that helps :)

Wow, great question. It's one I've been struggling with for a long time. I tend to err on the side of reason especially anytime something gets an emotional response out of me. I try to step back and explore why i feel the way I do and look at it from another person's emotional perspective. Maybe that's the way to do it. Just do a sytematic exploration of all emotions involved regarding a particular issue and decide what's justified. Wish I knew.

Emotion and reason are the balance you need them both in equal parts

there is no contradiction further down in the core, at the root of being...both those things (duality) are just illusions of separateness. I recommend yoga and mediation to learn how to apply both in your life. how to balance them. And why they really do not contradict.
