Some of mine are rock hard and they just dont work any more. are they just past their expiration date?

yeah or also rub the end on the carpet floor, it'll clean it off and work like new.

Try using a nail file on them to get the hard 'skin' off. Just act like you're trying to 'erase' the rough side of the file!

Use a knife or scissors to cut off a thin layer from it. Then the rest of it should work again.
