It bothered me that he was misusing religion for his own personal gain. Then again, this is the man who had the media videotape him praying by himself just to demonstrate that he's supposedly religious. Muslims around the world don't like him; he's a dictator who killed hundreds of thousands of Muslims.
Also, his Ba'ath party was very secular, it had secularism as a party platform (it was one of the stars on the Iraqi flag), and he brutally enforced that by executing people who went to the mosque too much (he thought they were planning against him). So you're right about him doing a U-turn, his religiousness never really became a big deal until the Gulf war, when he thought he could rally the faithful into supporting him. (sheesh!)

The only much more frightening and sickening thing was when GWB was actually talking to God in bed, and God instructed him as to his mission.
The phrase "Alla Akbar" (God is great) is said all the time by Moslem's and is used as a call to prayer.

No more sickened than when the President said that he had consulted God before attacking Iraq and being responsible for the deaths of 200,000 Iraqis and 3200 American personnel.

He's not the only delusional god-botherer in the world. (Though don't get me wrong, I know he's a very evil man.)
Bush does the same sort of thing, only with a bible. And Tony Blair claims to talk to god too.
