The theory that what sailors used to see was not mermaids but manatees is baffling. What woman would be shaped like a manatee? Have you ever seen a manatee in the wild? BIG critter. That is no mermaid. THOUGHTS?

Sailors at sea - manatees into mermaids (yes I've seen a manatee, they are big, lol)... Could be the sea air, being at sea for a long time could make you a bit dillusional, could have been dipping into the booze, could have been projecting also, could have seen a manatee but thought for a second they looked half human, and that's how they made up the story of beautiful mermaids, something to dream about on those nights that are just so lonely...

It would be really awesome if mermaids were real, but they're probably not. The explorers probably just saw the tails of the manatees and started to talk about beautiful women who lived in the ocean and had a tail.

Have you ever been on a boat for a long, long time with a bunch of guys? Eye-care was non-existent back then and they were on boats. There is another saying you may have heard of "Good from afar, but far from good!"...At a quick glance, the curves of a manatee might have been all their imagination needed!

Imagine you've been out to sea for months and months. Imagine the things you'd miss. Imagine the tricks your mind might play on you as you stare out at the ocean, longing for the comforts of home. The mind can seize on something that even only faintly resembles anything real, then fills in the details to make that image fit a know pattern...or even only part of one.

So you might see a pretty lady with a fish tail where there is none.

When you've been at sea for 8 months, with nothing but booze to drink and other men's azzes to look at, I imagine a manatee looks pretty damned good!

Put a little lipstick on her, a wig, and start fsucking.

sailors are a very interesting lot and there may have been some
" tall tails " spun over a glass of grog at the local tavern. sometimes one dreams of what one longs for and on a ship over months on end a sailor's longing must have been terrible. personally can understand as I would love to have the company of a sweet lass myself. been a long long time

Hundreds of years ago, at sea for months at a time, with no contact with land or women, the male mind can come up with all sorts or things.
