The theory is this: (no one knows for sure)
According to geologists, a model that explains plate movement should include three forces. Those three forces are the pull of gravity; convection currents, or the circulating movement of fluid rocky material in the mantle; and thermal plumes, or vertical columns of molten rocky material in the mantle.

If I can remember I believe Lava flow under the plates is what causes plate movement. In turn friction from the plates running into and against is what causes earthquakes.

the sea floor spreading is whats causing the plates movements and sea floor spreading is the movment and spreading of the water which affects the plates and this is the theory the plate tichtonics of the sea floor spreading. hope i helped
