A ghostwriter is a writer whose work is credited to another. Ghostwriters are often employed by celebrities to write autobiographies in situations in which the celebrities themselves may not be talented writers, or are too busy doing other work.

A ghost writer isn't a dead author its more an editor of your thoughts. Authors use ghost writers to transform their thoughts into wordable paragraphs & phrases to be used in writing their books. Ghost writers are popular when writing auto-biographies.

The name of these modest writers can be pretty confusing. I think it's called ghost writers because we cannot see who has written the books. Hence, the word 'ghost.' They are living people though!

Though I wonder how anybody can be so selfless and generous and allow these celebrities to take credit for something that the celebs have not written.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if these celebs can actually write the books themselves?

Ghost writer is a writer who does not take credit . . .
Credit is taken by the speaker or person who gets credit as author on the manuscript.
They write for other people.

No, ghost writers are people who will write books for others without having their name on the book. These people get the money (or a portion of it, at least) for the book, but without the publicity.

E.g. John Doe writes an "autobiography" for Joe Smith, a famous actor. Joe Smith sells the book as his own, and gets tons of publicity for it. He then gives John Doe a fraction (say, 1/2) of the book's royalties as payment.

A ghost writer is someone who 'tidies up' a celebrity autobiography. In general, the celebrity tells them the story and they write it down in an (semi) intelligent manner, because a lot of the people whose stories we read wouldn't be able to write for toffee.

Usually it means a person who writes on behalf of another person.
However there is what is called Automatic Writing and this is where a person writes a message with a pen that is moved by the Spirit of a dead person, hence it could be called Ghost Writing...!

ghost writers are writers that give their work to other to use as their own for compensation for example: in the music industry there are ghost writers for rap artists that claim they wrote the lyrics themselves but really its the ghost writers and get money in return its usually really secretive and you never hear about them like their"ghosts" -mostly work anonymously.
