This is a very good question. Radon Gas results in 10,000 - 20,000 lung Cancer deaths per year according to the EPA.

In my opinion, the reason why people remain unconcerned is because it takes so long to manifest health problems from the gas.

In truth, studies using miners exposed to very high levels of radon gas for short periods of time (1-2 years) showed less health effects than residential exposures of 4.0 picoCuries or higher for 20 years.

Home Radon tests are inexpensive solution and often offered free by State Radon Offices. They can rule out the presence of Radon at high levels which can provide much needed piece of mind. If a house has a radon concentration over 4.0 picoCuries, then a remediation system should be installed.

Most regions in the U.S. do not have a problem with radon gas accumulating in basements.

In those areas that do have radon problems, most houses are made to have enough air-exchanges to vent out the radon accumulation pretty regularly. It really has only been a significant problem since we started heavily weather-proofing homes for energy conservation. Sealing the house reduces the number of air exchanges, and allows radon to build up to higher concentrations.

So, the simple solution is to open your windows and let the fresh air in! Don't need to spend a whole bunch of money to do that!
