Given that they are nota native species to the UK, and are largely responsible for a massive change in the eco-system over time, decimating songbird population through the introduction of a indiscriminant predator, and so forth, why on Earth do some people hold them in such high regard?
If you ask me, there should be an open-season on cats, particulalry the ones that come into your garden and crap everywhere.
They don't belong here!!!

Shadow Queen - no they haven't - there aren't any songbirds in the deserts of north Africa.....birds are only a prey source because mankind introduced the cat to UK shores. Normally a cat would prey on small mammals.

I LOVE cats...but overpopulation is a real issue.
I don't advise "open season"
but something needs to be done. Maybe the government needs to provide more funds to a humane society to fix the cats so they do not continue multiplying...and (sadly) put down the feral cats they cannot find homes for.
Stray cats can cause huge issues!

I love cats because they can calm me down just
by purring. Cats are soft, quiet and loving. They
are self cleaning, curious and a joy to own. As for
the reduction of the songbird, cats have been chasing birds long before man showed up. Mankind has done more destruction to the balance of nature
than any cat ever will.

i hear lots of birds in the morning. and i have a cat. i have grown up with cat lovers and it's rubbed off. when i come home from a stressful day and she rubs round my legs it makes me feel better, when i look at her i cant help but smile, i lost my snowy about a month ago who ive had since i was 10, it broke my heart as i felt like id lost a family member. i cant explain exactly why but cats are a major part of my life and as you find it hard to understand that i find it hard to understand that you dislike them. and it's not lack of children, well i dont have any kids yet but i am only 22 and have only been married for 1 and half years. i plan to have children in a few years but will still keep cats.

I was once like you, I hated cats and thought they were only good for fighting or cooking.
However, my girlfriend convinced me to get a cat for our new house (which, to my disgust, was unsuitable for dogs!) and now I love our cat to pieces! He doesnt crap on other peoples lawns, he's kind enough to do it in our kitchen! And as for "decimating" songbird population, my cat couldnt catch a cold, let alone a bird.
He's a real character, and he's always thereto make me smile and laugh and keep me company, thats why I love my cat.

Once you have 1 you change your thoughts on them. Cats are there for you when you need them but then they also leave you alone when needed. My cats are awesome! When they curl up at the foot of the bed you can't help but love them.
Open season on cats...that's horrible!!! If there were no cats outside our homes we would all have mice.
