If you are using MLA style, which you use for most papers in your classes, you can use footnotes and a works cited page in your paper. You are required to use a works cited page if using MLA style, but footnotes are optional.

There are several different systems or sets of rules for deciding how to do this. One is called the MLA system (Modern Language Association); andother is the APA system (American Psychological Assoc) and another is the Chicago or Turabian system.

So, there is no one answer to how to do it.

But, the most widely used system is the MLA.

In the MLA system you do not use footnotes. Instead, you put a citation in parenthesis right after the quote or information, then in the back of the paper you have a Works Cited page which lists all the sources alphabetically,

THere are lots of websites that explain how to do this, so google around a little and see if you can find some detailed explanations.

There are some ameliorations. A footnote provides you the recommendations on the region contained in the paper the position the time-honored source cloth change into used, which provides you it context. The footnote may also refer the reader to different resources, or perhaps make digressions into correct matters and resources. A works stated web page might want to operate both as endnotes or as a bibliography. An endnote web page places each of the footnotes in a unmarried region, that would want to be a lot less annoying to position in writing (although any application nicely worth its salt can put in footnotes conveniently), yet you lose the convenience of mating the source with the correct counsel contained in the paper. A bibliography purely provides the list of works utilized in writing the paper, and would not element to exhibit pages. The bibliography might want to also contain works no longer absolutely stated (although a real works stated web page does no longer attempt this). without web page numbers, you no longer purely lose the certain connection with the stated cloth, yet might want to also get a decrease grade (assuming it truly is being graded) for no longer giving certain cites.

Footnotes for direct quotes and 'works cited' for bibliography is pretty standard stuff for legal briefs.

You can use anything in your essay providing you give proper citations to where you got it. Do not take anything without saying who you got it from.
