He said this in 1994.
Can anyone watch this video and then honestly say that this man was a good candidate for the job?
Americans should be outraged that Bush thought it was a good idea to go around Congress' back and issue a recess appointment for this guy -- someone who has nothing but contempt for the United Nations.

His actual quotation is “There is no such thing as the United Nations. There is an international community that occasionally can be led by the only real power left in the world and that is the United States when it suits our interest and we can get others to go along.''
Clearly he subscribes to the realist school of thought; there is no international law and nothing to govern over the countries. Countries are selfish and only work for themselves and not for any moral or ethical goal. There is more than one school of thought in international relations, but this is one and it's arguable.
I'm not ideologically committed to this position, though it's true sometimes. The objection was that Mr. Bolton seems dead-set on this one, and excludes the other schools of thought and their ideas, like international cooperation and creating international laws enforced by groups like the UN.

You have to understand the neocon[oh, am I allowed to use that term] thinking. They can't have the UN making decisions, it takes the power away from them. They have been on a campaign to weaken the UN for more than a decade, they only want the UN to be a puppet for their decisions, as evidenced by the Iraq resolutions. When they couldn't get a resolution to go into Iraq, they ignored the UN. John Bolton is merely one of their attack dogs.

If he actually said it - it would probably be a comment on the fact that the phrase 'United Nations' is a contradiction in terms.
