What is a good way to get started on writing lyrics?

I have recently started a band and i have no clue how to write a good song.

If you want to write a social conscious song research current events. Otherwise just look at personal experiences, your life is a song waiting to be written. (I think that's a quote)

Do you have a passion for poetry? To me, lyrics are poetry set to music. I've heard song writers say two distinct things about writing songs. Either they will say that a tune or rhythm gets stuck in their head that will naturally call for specific lyrics, or the lyrics come first -- and the tune is assigned by the lyrics' rhythm & meter.

About writing poetry -- write something about which you feel passionate, or something that makes you laugh, or something that's normally hard to say with just a conversation. Once you have your inspiration, the words will flow.

try writing a poem that's meaningful to you. lyrics are basically poems put to music. you can always adjust the words to the music if need be. write whatever you want whether it be about a nationally catastrophe like 9/11 or something like a relationship or your own life. loretta lynn wrote a song just based on her life and it was a HUGE hit. it still is a favorite to many including myself. what type of music are y'all gonna play?

Not sure how awkward this might sound but I came up with most of my lyrics while I was in the shower!
I just wrote about the stuff that was on my mind.

Music first, then the lyrics. Much, much easier that way.

definately start with a good hook and then work from there, usually it just flows once you know what your hook is and put your all into it
