First Call the Master, then get a fix if you can. If you can't get a fix, remember, you are never far from a good DR. If your emergency requires all hands, you are going to ground, have a collision or allision, sound the general alarm, fire and emergency. Check the chart for bottom charecteristics and depth if you have time. If you still have the engines, order up full astern. When the master gives the order to drop the anchor, it will be on a short stay, to take way off her, then payed out gradually untill enough way is taken off to fetch up.

When there is an emergency, sometimmes anchoring can give some time to fix the problem. In an engine emergency, find a place to anchor, out of traffic and preferably not in the current. The crew have assigned duties with anchor, with steering, with engine.Definitely get a fix to know where you are. Watch for dragging or movement at anchor. Check for any further problems that might be related.

Emergency astern on the prop, and let the anchor go. Pay out anchor cable, stop engines, Apply brakes to anchor cable.
