101 Longeing and Longlining Exercises, a book written by Cherry Hill. She's great!

My advice, in everything you do, teach the horse to move from pressure. This means to move his hip when pressure applied to the flank, etc. Don't worry about longeing him in a circle at first, just get him to understand that when the whip is behind him swishing, tapping the ground, etc., he needs to move forward. Once he gets this, then you can work on directing the forward energy, but longeing will be unsuccessful as long as he doesn't understand this concept.

the real question at hand here is do you know how to lunge a horse? cuz if you don't you first need to learn how to do this with a horse that knows how and then you can teach one how to lunge from scratch. so getting a video and watching is a great idea, cuz there is alot of body language involved in lungeing a horse.
so to start off a horse to lunge from scratch, get a 12 foot lead and just start to teach them to walk around you and move away from you. starting them on a shorter lead and then moving on to a 30 ft circle is much easier. I do with babies when first teaching them to lunge and it works so much better, in a few days they understand and lunge with no problems and aren't pulling on me. good luck

I'm sure any basic training book would explain it. I don't know any offhand so I can just give you my own experience.
Can the horse lead? Get your horse leading properly. Remember to ALWAYS stand at the horse's shoulder. If you stand in front of him, he'll stop.
Start with a very short line, like 2 feet, and guide him around you. Stand beside his chest, near his rump, and pull the leap rope forward and click him forward, nudge him if you need to. You may have to keep moving to keep behind/beside him and practically pulling him forward to make a circle, and to get him to keep stepping forward, but it really won't take long for him to figure it out, and you can go with longer and longer lines.
Other than that, the only tip I can give you is to stop while you're ahead. Horses get frustrated too; if you're trying to do something and your horse just isn't figuring it out, stop, and go back to what you were doing before, that your horse can do. Always finish on a positive note and your horse will pick it up way faster than if you quit because you give up.
Good luck! As I say, it should be quite simple to get him to figure it out. Horses are smart.

Are you a trainer? Usually only trainers should teach horses to longe, because if you are inexperienced you can teach horses very bad behaviour without realizing it. Good luck! :)

carry a stick-and-string, or lunge whip. do not touch her, in simple terms shop her going with that. try this in a roundpen with a appropriate lunge line, so she is generally happening with the place she's going. I in simple terms at the instant watched a Dennis Reis component on colt commencing, and he taught a colt to lunge. shop her going with the whip. If she stops or slows down without you telling her to, or she tries to teach around, crack the whip. in simple terms shop her going. After your first consultation she might have plenty extra appreciate for you, understanding which you are the boss, and she or he'll love and have faith you extra beneficial than ever! Have 15-30 minute training daily till she's have been given it down. prepare walk for 2 days, walk-trot for 3 days, and walk-trot-canter 5 days. determine you slender it right down to one million consultation daily, so she isn't overwhelmed. sturdy success! P.S in no way crack the whip in anger! this could make her concern you. in simple terms say an employer, comfortable "Come on." every time she starts to decelerate or provide up without you telling her to. i like to assert the two "Come on, girly" to my mares and fillies and "Come on, previous pal" to my colts, stallions, and geldings so as that they comprehend i'm not mad, in simple terms urging them forward! satisfied education! :) EDIT: this is acceptable to not have somebody walk with them. the pony has to comprehend the guy lunging them, is the BOSS! And nobodys gonna shop maximum suitable them around. additionally, if the pony bolts in concern, the guy might get trampled!
