Ah....we are decoding the human genome right now and guess what the latest article (last week) said? That more and more illnesses are found in the genes. I can tell you, depression, mental illness, they start with a predisposition, a genetic difference....and they are influenced readily by factors such as stress, love, support, insight and whether or not a person seeks treatment before it hits crisis. I believe in the future they will be able to look at your DNA and tell you what diseases or tendencies you should be aware of. They are even talking about splicing genes (like cutting out the brown in a banana) except they might replace the broken code with the right codes! Yea! I think it's wonderful, and if you read about science and technology, some of the latest reads have to do with advances in proposed genetic therapies. We have bipolar in my family...dad has it, I do, and my nine year old son. So yes, that illness is known to be very genetic. I am also a mental health nurse, and I can tell you that even things like conduct disorder (responsible for criminal behaviors) and anorexia, alcoholism...all of it is getting tied to the genes. Think of the wonderful world it will be when we can fix all those genes.

Both. I used to think it was all environment. I've worked so hard to buy a house in a nice neighborhood, gotten involved in my kids schools, exposed them to different cultures, tried to foster an appreciation for the arts, allowed them to think and find constructive ways to express themselves. Yet, my son, exhibits a lot of the same behaviors of a couple of his predicessors. I see a lot of my mentally ill (but nice) dad. I also see a lot of my son's father (sociopath) in him. It's really scary because he hasn't been around either of them very much. I've put him in an alternate school setting, take him to counseling, and make sure he gets his prescribed meds. He's doing better in a lot of ways, but still he seems stuck in his funk. At some point I hope that he'll be motivated to help himself, because nothing I can do will matter unless it matters to him.

I am not sure who this question deals with- you or another person. Depression and anxiety are very real things. The factors involved are very vast. Often, it's as simple as a person was not taught how to deal wtih emotions. Learning how to handle emotions well is a skill that has to be learned. Then, on top of this, sometimes more help is needed. Check with your doctor.

They can be caused by either or both. I treat my depression and anxiety with good nutrition and dietary supplements. Exercise is helpful, also.( In the winter time lack of sunlight can cause depression; some say taking vitamin D helps.) The nutrition details can be found in books on the subject, usually written by Naturalpathic doctors.

Neither; Depression is a personality disorder that stems from a young mother like yourself, ignoring my wonderful face passing me by as if eye never existed at all. The result of the whole act forces me to become bitter as well as anxious, then i scream out my most boldess lyrics from very loud music in which only eye can weigh and understand fully the cause of HUman folly. In which i may add, i feel nothing at all. Thankyou for noticing me.

DEPRESSION IS CAUSED BY THE LACK OF GRATITUDE. GRATITUDE IS THE BASIS FOR HAPPINESS. WHEN YOU CHOOSE TO APPRECIATE THE SMALL THINGS IN LIFE YOU WILL FIND HAPPINESS. PEOPLE DIAGNOSED WITH DEPRESSION ARE SPOILED AND LACK GRATITUDE. CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE AND LEARN TO APPRECIATE SIMPLE THINGS LIKE A BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF THE MOUNTAINS.
