Do you feel that the British government is taking advantage of the British population and in general the public do nothing to contest it?

Recently 2 things have really gotten to me:

1. They are going to bring in a tax for how many miles you drive
2. They want pay increases of up to 66% for MPs

I don't drive but will do shortly, at the moment public transport is far too expensive to use all the time, however, the government is decreasing the amount of parking spaces at public areas to force people to use public transport. I.e. hospitals. In my case my nearest hospital is 30 minutes drive away, to get public transport it would take me closer to 2 hours to get there.

So, do you feel the British government is just using us, and do you feel we need to do something about it?

All opinions are welcome whether you are a Brit or not.

From an outsider’s prospective it appears that British citizens have never had much of a voice in their government. The monarchy was replaced by a parliamentary system which left at least half the power in the hands of the rich land owners and those in the royal line. It is only when the citizenry gets violently upset that the government takes any meaningful action. Now with video cameras everywhere the English have less privacy than any people in the world. It is obvious from the outside that the UK has a very oppressive society.

You are so right. It seems incredible to me that as we steadily loose our freedoms to the "nanny State" people put up with it without complaining. Our society now enjoys the highest level of surveillance of any country in the world - but few protest because it is sold to us as an anti-crime measure. This is an increasingly common way of getting society to accept loss of freedoms placidly. The number of legal safeguards for the citizen that have been compromised or lost in the name of the struggle against pedophiles is remarkable. But because everyone is against pedophiles the erosions have been accepted - few realize that what has been lost in one cause can be lost for all. I have heard it argued that Britain has more potentially repressive laws than Nazi Germany - the reason that Gremany was worse being that the Nazis just ignored any law or safeguard they considered inconvenient, and did not always resort to legislation.
