A "good" score will depend on your goals. Here is how to find out what "good" is for you:
1) Pick 3-5 scools you'd LOVE to attend.
2) Call each school's admissions office and ask what the median ACT score the median GPA was for this year's freshmen.
3) Calculate your own GPA.
If your GPA is roughly in the same ballpark as the median, your ACT goals are also around the median. The lower your GPA, the higher your ACT scores need to be; the higher your GPA, the less you have to stress about ACTs.
Step 4 is to take a realistic practice test that will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses. The idea is to study smarter and earn more points. After all, if your GPA is above the median, a high ACT score can "score" you academic scholarships! Check out a free practice test at your local Kaplan center; consider also taking advantage of other free workshops like "admissions 101", "essay writing", and others.
And don't forget to take a practice SAT, too, as you may perform much better on that test.
good luck!

You can easily check this online, but last year the average for all kids who took the ACT was about 21. I was at a talk recently with a counselor from a top Ivy league school and he said the average for his entering class was 31. So that's the range....
In general, the ACT or SAT score will be be similar to your GPA. If you have an average GPA then probably your ACT will be about average. That's what the colleges expect. It's just a way to check that your GPA is legitimate.
The colleges would take notice if you either had an ACT much lower compared to your GPA or much higher. They really dont like it when you have low marks and a high ACT, because that means you are smart, but didnt work hard in school. No one wants to admit someone who is going to goof around and be lazy in school. If you had a high GPA and a low ACT that might mean you are only average smart, but you work hard to get good marks. Everyone wants students that work hard.
You might improve your scores a bit by trying to buy points with a Kaplan course... but they are really expensive and they dont help that much. So, be careful before you buy that expensive program.
