The definitive book to read about serial killers is "Mindhunter" by John Douglas. John Douglas is one of the FBI profilers who invented modern profiling as you see it now on TV and in the movies, and "Mindhunter" and the techniques in it are very loosely the inspiration for the movie "Silence of the Lambs" (which I believe John Douglas was a consultant on.)

John Douglas also wrote "Journey into darkness," "Obsession," and "the anatomy of motive". All of those are about cases he himself worked on. He's also written some true crime books about serial killers that feature crimes he didn't work on directly.

His co-worker Robert K. Ressler, also an FBI profiler, has written several books, including "Whoever fights monsters" and "I have lived in the monster." both very good.

Also Ann Rule is a great writer who (creepily enough) worked as Ted Bundy's volunteer partner at a suicide hotline center! She's a former police beat news reporter who has written about 40 books on true crime (some serial killers, some not.) All of her books are very well-written. You might like "Green River, Running Red" which is about the Green River Killer, a serial killer in the pacific northwest.
