My Aunt wants one for Christmas: manual, metal, large enough for
1-2 pound chuck of cheese, dishwasher safe ... thinking of going to target.

Think what she may have in mind is the grater with different sizes of holes. It is about 10" tall and square. There are 4 sides with different grating hole sizes. good luck

A grater makes smaller particles than a shredder. Compare cabbage in coleslaw (shredded) vs parmisan cheese on spagetti (grated).

shredding makes it into very small pieces. a grater makes it into "stringy" cheese.
