What type of work experience do you think is more likely to help me work up to a better position? Working in a less known company and performing a multitude of duties or working in a well known company and likely performing fewer duties?

I should mention that I do not plan on staying at this job for very long (<1 year), and my main goal in to be able to more easily find a job in another country afterwards. Thanks so far everyone!

Working in a well known company will help you to achieve your ultimate target for the following cogent reasons:
1. You will learn how to work in a professional way
2. Operations at well known companies are often constrained by time and this makes you ready for work in an under-pressured environment.
3. Your CV would earn more points.

Doing a good job to the best of your abilities is the best way of earning advancement. It doesn't matter what the company is; big or small; well known or not. Obviously if its a really small company then you will do less well within that company but if you show willing then you are going to end up with a far better reference than if you don't or if you just do what is needed.
There is no easy way to get a good job, getting and keeping a good job is 100% hard work. Luck does help, but someone with no luck can get a good job, someone without hard work is very unlikely to get where they want to be.
Bear in mind that in very big or well known companies you'll have to work even harder to be noticed as they will have far more choice for each position.
Lastly if you want to work abroad (you don't say where) get a foreign language, something useful, even if your destination of choice is not somewhere that language would be used much it shows willingness to learn, and ability! If you have a destination in mind pick something that would be useful sure.

I would say a smaller company, and someone that has done a variety of tasks. You will be a more well rounded employee because you understand how things work together.
Sometimes when you work for a larger company you do the same thing day in and day out. You can only get so good at a job, and after that experience doesn’t matter. Have you ever heard the saying Someone has been working ten years but only has one year experience? It means they have been doing the same job for ten years but hasn’t learned anything in nine years.
My vote is the smaller company with more duties

Future employers always like the fact that a person can absorb all sorts of information even if some is useless, that way the multi tasker will have a wider choice of jobs and impress at the next interview. Learn more skills with the lesser known company then spread your wings with all the knowledge, Good Luck.

That's quite difficult. Are there any job prospects at the end of either of them? Probably a lesser known company with more duties would be best as you would have more experience in the job role that you would be able to put onto your CV.

I would say the lesser known company because employers will be more concerned with the range of skills you have than with the reputation of the company

if you work in a smaller company, by the time it gets big you will be at a much higher level
only problem is finding a company that is sure to get big!

do something that makes you happy, and you will never work a day in your life. However you may go hungry as fun jobs are usally low paid, so go for the cash, and sleep well at night.

Take the job that will give you more responsibility. Work up the ladder. If you have to switch jobs every year to get more responsibility and more money, do that.
