I am charting my basal temp for the first time this month. I know that my temp rises 1-2 days after ovulation. But I am wondering when the menstral change occurs - before or after my period and does it rise or fall? Also, does your temp rise any (and how much) above the base line if you are pregnant?

It really depends upon the person. Your temp will fall, but some women experience a gradual fall a few days before...others may see a drop the day OF, the day BEFORE, etc. It really depends.

You can't bank on post-ovulatory temps, alone, to determine if you are pregnant. It just doesn't work that way. HOWEVER, I will say this: When I charted with BOTH of my pregnancies, I found that my temps were higher post-ovulation with my pregnancy charts than they were with my non-pregnancy charts. You will have higher temps, anyway, after you ovulate....that is because of the progesterone after ovulation. Some women (like I did) will have higher temps than ever before after ovulation...others will have the same as they were in non-pregnancy charts.

The only thing charting does is really determine ovulation and when. It cannot tell you if you are pregnant. Sucks, doesn't it?? I've spent a lot of time trying to analyze those temps and you just can't cause yourself that anxiety!

Generally speaking, if you get to 18days past ovulation with no period, you are pregnant, but many women have already tested by then:)

If you are not pregnant, your temp will usually drop slightly just before your period starts. Mine usually drops about 0.2-0.3 degrees F. It then usually drops another 0.2-0.3 degrees after my period ends. When I was pregnant, my temp raised about 0.3 degrees right around the time of implantation. I stopped taking my temps when I got a positive blood test, but my temps stayed elevated up until I stopped taking them. My temps are generally about 0.3-0.5 degrees above my baseline after ovulation.
