I just wanted to see what others opinions were on the issue. I live in oilfield country, and it makes the majority of people's living. Let me explain how the oilfield works, for those who don't know. When the price of gas/oil goes up, that means profit for the oil companies, meaning more work for people. If the price goes down, then that means the oilfield shuts down and alot of people are out of work. It is opposite of supply and demand, like I thought it was. I just wanted to inform people of how it is. I don't care if they raise the gas 5 or even 10 cents, that means my husband and many of my family members still have jobs. I am not being biased, just want to know what you think, and to help people understand how it works here. Thank you.

Comment to Strike_eagle: You are going to gripe about $2.81 a gallon. Would you rather pay that, or the taxes taken out to support my family when my husband loses his job and we have to get on government assistance? The oilfield is the only skill many in this area know. You can have your opinion, but that was below the belt, and was uncalled for.

We are led by the nose by those kind of images, our perceptions clouded by a government -media coalition whose number one function is to maintain the status quo, the present direction of cash flow. The petroleum industry is so automated an increase or decrease in production of 25% doesn’t affect industry employment 2%. Classic example: gas price drops a dollar a gallon for the election, now skyrocketing up again? We had an "energy crisis" in 1973-74 (Arab Oil Embargo) bringing about several very viable energy sources. Look up the annual flow figures for the Alyeska pipeline, flowing at 96% rated capacity in 1976, now flowing at less than 30%. The number of wells on the North Slope has doubled since 1974…. Do the math. We are being SCREWED by the oil monopoly. The military signed over the ownership of the Elk Hills petroleum reserves years ago to private oil interests, the pumping facilities are in place, the oil is there (a 1000 year supply we are told), and not one barrel has been pumped… You never hear about any of this on the evening news. Employment is not a viable issue when talking about the gas price rip off. They (the U.S. petroleum monopoly) is sending refined gasoline by the millions of gallons to Japan to be sold for to the public for $7 a gallon instead of sold here for $2 wholesale. THAT kind of market manipulation is, in any mans world, called crime.

I agree with liker of minnesota. The USA needs to upgrade its public transportation system so we are not consuming so much fuel. This will be better for the economy and for our pockets.
Something a lot of Americans don't want to realize is that for short trips you can ride a bike. I understand that sometimes this is not feasible, especially where I live. People in outlying areas would not want to bike 20 or 30 miles, I am just talking about people who live in cities.
But there is an alternative to bikes - motor scooters are cheap and give excellent gas mileage, and you can attach cargo racks to them. Also there is nothing wrong with buying a Chevy Aveo or Honda Civic instead of a huge SUV.
I hate when the price of gas goes up. I understand your perspective, however it is different from the vast majority of Americans. I want to see people conserving gas and see lower prices at the pumps!

I think that we could reduce the prices at the pump by eleiminating many of the middle men, as paper oil companies exist that only up the price, I also believe that both federal and state taxes are way too high per gallon, and ought to be reduced or done away with, doing so would decrease the average price by 48 cents per gallon according to AAA. The oil executives make way too much money and record profits ned to be sujected to windfall profit taxes.

This is how I feel. The gas prices are too high and the reason the gas prices are so high is because there are so many people using cars altogether. If as a nation the USA improved its public transportation system and lifted it to the standards of that of Germany, England , and Japan, the gas prices would be like they are. If we started using "alternative" fuels such as biodiesel(which can be made easily), electric, and start make those "alternative" fuels the standard instead of "alternative", the gas prices would drop fast because people would use less gas.
That is how I feel.

The price of gasoline, adjusted for inflation, is the same that it was in 1957. As a cost of labor (that is, how many minutes must an average worker work in order to buy a gallon of gasoline) the cost is lower than it was in 1957.
The cost of gasoline is largely set by market forces.

Currently, I think it is not good. Here we're paying extremely high amounts of money, while the oil compainies are raking in record profits. Does anyone else smell a rat?

SO WE SHOULD CONTINUE TO PAY 2.81 PER GALLON SO THAT YOU KEEP WORKING. WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN PEOPLE START TO REALIZE THAT THEY NEED TO CONSERVE. THE AVERAGE WORKING MAN NOW HAS TO TAKE FOOD OFF HIS TABLE TO PUT IT ON YOURS. DOESN'T SOUND FAIR TO ME. ALTERNATIVE FUELS NOW THATS WHAT WE NEED. THE TECHNOLOGY IS THERE. WE NEED TO IMPLEMENT IT.
YOU WISH FOR THE WORLD TO DO BAD IN ORDER FOR YOU TO DO GOOD. DOES THAT SOUND LIKE SOMETHING WE SHOULD SIT DOWN AND HANDLE. YOU NEED TO WORRY ABOUT LEARNING A NEW TRADE. FUNNY HOW YOU WOULD RUN TO WELFARE INSTEAD OF LEARNING A NEW TRADE IN ORDER TO WORK AND SUPPORT YOUR FAMILY NOT BEG TO BARELY MAKE IT. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WHEN EVERY ONE LIKE ME GETS A FUEL CELL SUV THAT WILL TRAVEL AROUND NYC WITH NO GAS.
OH YOU SAID WELFARE. WHY DON'T YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND MOVE IN WITH ME. THE WAY YOU PUT IT, I HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF YOU EITHER WAY.
IF MY COMMENT WAS BELOW THE BELT YOURS WAS BELOW THE TANK. AS YOU CAN SEE NO ONE WANTS TO PAY HIGHER GAS PRICES SO THAT A COUPLE OF HUNDRED PEOPLE KEEP THEIR JOBS. THAT IS TOTALLY SELFISH OF YOU TO BELIEVE THAT IF WE PAY HIGHER GAS YOU GET TO KEEP YOUR JOB. SELFISH JUST PLAIN SELFISH.
ALTERNATIVE FUELS NOW OUR LUNGS AND THE PLANET NEED A BREAK.
PS MY TAXES WILL NOT GO UP IF YOU GO ON WELFARE. THEY WOULD STILL STAY THE SAME . I RATHER PAY LOWER FUEL CHARGES. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO TELL ALL THE POOR AMERICANS THAT CAN'T PAY FOR FUEL TO HEAT THEIR HOMES THIS WINTER. YOU DON'T CARE AS LONG AS YOUR WORKING LET EVERYONE FREEZE. SORRY GIRL THAT DOESN'T FLY WITH ME.
