Van Helsing was a character in the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. The character in the novel, however, is nothing like the character in the movie. Van Helsing is a doctor in the novel who is called in to help Lucy who is thought to be sick. Using his knowledge of vampires and thier myths, Van Helsing figures out that Lucy is being turned into a vampire. He then leads the protagonists on a hunt to kill Dracula. His name in the novel is Abraham, which is interesting because the novel Dracula is a Christian allegory about the triumph of Christ over the antichrist (Dracula). Van Helsing also represents the fusion of the modern and the ancient. He uses both modern and mythical techniques in his pursuit of the vampire. He is not, however, a vampire hunter in the novel.

Van Helsing is a 2004 American action / horror film about a vampire-hunter directed by Stephen Sommers. The film stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale.
Based on a version of the character of Abraham Van Helsing from Bram Stoker's novel Dracula, the film also incorporates characters from many other works into the narrative like the Wolf Man, and draws particularly on literary classics of the gothic horror canon such as Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein. The plot also pays homage to James Bond films.[verification needed]

Van Helsing is the lead character from Bram Stoker's Dracula novel, he's not real.
note however that the original Van Helsing from Dracula is called Abraham, whilst in the movie his name is Gabriel, apparently this is so that the film makers could hold onto the rights for the name
