Many can last a life time. Though newer ones may not, got to think repeat customers today. But, I know people that have freezers from the 1960's still going, they may not be as energy efficient, but, they still work. We have an old GE Refrigerator from the late 50's or early 60's, that thing still chugging along. It has to be defrosted as that before they made those types. We just use it in the Shop for cokes and beer.

I just replaced a fridge that had run for 30 years. The average refrig lasts for 8 - 10 years. Various factors affect the lifespan including temperature and line power. High room temperature makes the compressor runner hotter and work harder. Another situation that can cause a refrigerator(or AC) compressor to burn out faster is if you live in an area that experiences a lot of brownouts. My last refrigerator compressor burned out a couple weeks after running the fridge and furnace blower on a portable generator during power outage following an ice storm.

It depends on the brand...
On how you treat it...
And on a bit of luck.
I have one which is 31 years old. I had to change the thermostat when it was 6 years old and it has worked ever since.
It is quite common to see older fridges than mine still working.
Like they say...they don't make them like in the old days.
Everything today is made to last as long as the warranty + 1 year.
